The government of Nigeria, as in many countries, is restricted to a political elite that has held on to power for decades, and insists on passing on the torch to its allies, in what is commonly referred to as ‘godfather politics’. But what happens when one tries to go against the grain, as is the case of Nigerian human rights activist and founder of ‘Sahara Reporters’ Omoyele ‘Yele’ Sowore?
These godfathers, often not actively involved in government, are essential for any political hopeful looking to make a significant move. However, some are determined to try even without this backing. Such is the story of  Omoyele ‘Yele’ Sowore.

The United Nations on Wednesday released its long-awaited investigation into atrocities in northern Ethiopia, paving the way for possible international criminal charges.
Ever since Omar al-Bashir fell in April 2019, Sudan has been ruled by both civilians and the military. This forced marriage fraught with difficulties led to a brutal separation on 25 October.
When Egypt announced the lifting of a four-year-long state of emergency on 25 October, the news was widely welcomed. However, just a few days later, the approval of legal amendments, which gave the military and executive authorities broader powers, raised suspicions as to why the state of emergency was lifted in the first place.
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership of the ANC has thus far failed to stem his party’s tumbling showing in elections polls, and his detractors are likely to use it against him.
