Nigeria has been ranked the 10th biggest source of international students and the first in Africa.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) and the United States department of state’s bureau of educational and cultural affairs on Monday released the 2021 open doors report on international educational exchange.
The report included international students enrolled at higher education institutions in the US and online from abroad and those on optional practical training (OPT).
The data also showed that the US remains a top destination for international students, welcoming over 914,000 from over 200 places of origin.
The new report indicates there was a slight drop in the number of students from Nigeria currently studying in the US, less than half the worldwide average decline.
The current figure of 12,860 Nigerian students represents 33 percent of African students in the US, making Nigeria both the leading source of students from the continent and the 10th largest place of origin country worldwide.
