Nigerian musician Davido has pledged to donate N250 million (about $604,000) to orphanages in Nigeria to mark his 29th birthday.
Born David Adedeji Adeleke, “the Coolest Kid in Africa” took to Twitter earlier this month to ask his followers to send him money if they know he has given them a hit song.
Many people were skeptical about his motives for asking for the donation, but the response to his call out was overwhelmingly generous. Davido’s request was trending in Nigeria for four days, with the star posting regular updates for transparency.
Overall, the donations from crowdfunding raised N200 million (around $480,000), with Davido adding another N50 million (about $120,000) himself.
The Afrobeats singer turned 29 on Nov. 21 and to celebrate his birthday and commemorate his home country he released a statement about the donation on his social media platforms, commenting “We rise by lifting others.”
“I truly appreciate everyone who donated hard-earned funds and I am very thankful for your generosity,” he wrote. “I have always been passionate about giving back and helping people.”
He further added he had established a 5-person committee to help oversee the distribution of the funds.

This is not the first time that the “Champion Sound” musician has given back. The profits from the video of his hit single with Summer Walker, “Dolce & Gabbana” were donated towards research for the coronavirus. In 2019, Davido donated N15,000,000 to a staff member of Murtala Mohammad International Airport who was terminally ill. The money was used to settle her hospital bills and the staff at the airport raised placards showcasing their gratitude.
Davido was one of the headlining artists performing at Global Citizen Live on Sept. 25 in Lagos, Nigeria alongside Tiwa Savage and Femi and Made Kuti. The 24-hour global event focused on vaccine equity, reverting the hunger crisis, and combating catastrophic climate change.
