Onyeka Onwenu is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress and politician. Her music promotes Nigeria culture.
She clocked 70 on the 31st January 2022.
Her name, “The Elegant Stallion” always portrays style, beauty, class, and elegance at many social gatherings which stood her out in the history of African Music.
In public service, she was a one-time Chairperson of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. She was also appointed as the Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development during President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration.
Onyeka recently spoke on the difficulties she faced in her failed marriage. She was said to have married a Yoruba Muslim around 1984.
“I went through it. It was difficult because I really didn’t want my marriage to end but I could not take it anymore. It would have killed me. I always say and that is the truth.
And it was not good for the children to live in that kind of environment where the mother is depressed, the mother is carrying the weight of the whole family.” She said.
“I raised my children from kindergarten to Masters Degree. My husband didn’t pay school fees for one day, didn’t buy clothes, didn’t pay for holidays, didn’t give me housekeeping money, hard to believe.”
